Making the Smart Choice

Did you know that over half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling? So when the time comes to update your HVAC equipment, ERMU makes it easy to make the smart choice. Residential electric customers can receive rebates now toward the purchase of energy efficient HVAC equipment and enjoy reduced energy costs for years to come.

How to apply for a rebate

  1. Purchase qualifying equipment.
  2. Some HVAC rebates require installation by a registered contractor and/or supporting documentation to qualify for a rebate. Please see dropdowns below for requirements for specific rebates.
  3. Complete the HVAC Energy Efficient Rebate application or WiFi Thermostat Rebate application.
  4. Submit the completed rebate application, invoice, and supporting documentation to ERMU by mail, in person, or email at customerservice@ermumn.com.

The rebate will be processed in the form of a credit on your electric utility bill. Applicant must be an ERMU electric customer to qualify.

HEATING & COOLING

High Efficiency Central Air Conditioners are measured by Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). When comparing different AC units, use the SEER rating to determine which unit is rated most efficient; the higher the SEER rating, the higher the efficiency level of the unit. Higher efficiency equals lower bills. For example, switching out an old 8 SEER unit with a properly installed 16 SEER unit can reduce your monthly energy cost by nearly 50 percent.

Rebate amounts vary depending on the SEER rating:

SEER Rating
Rebate Amount
14.5 – 14.9
$75
15.0 – 15.9
$100
16.0 and above
$125

Rebate Application Requirements:

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) provide home cooling and supplemental heating with 72 percent less electricity than conventional air conditioners and furnaces. You can switch between cooling and heating directly from the thermostat, putting you in complete control.

Rebate amounts vary depending on the SEER rating:

SEER Rating
Rebate Amount
14.5 – 14.9
$550
15.0 – 15.9
$650
16.0 and above
$750

Rebate Application Requirements:

Ductless Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) make excellent retrofit add-ons to homes with non-ducted heating systems. They can also be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing ductwork isn't feasible. An outdoor condenser connected to individually controlled indoor units allows for zoned heating and cooling, which maximizes comfort and energy savings.

ERMU offers rebates on the following ASHPs with a SEER rating of 16 or higher: $400 for homes heated by natural gas, propane, or fuel oil, and $600 for homes heated by electric.

Rebate Application Requirements:

An electronically commutated motor (ECM) helps save energy and money by running your furnace at the best speed possible, versus a traditional motor that always runs the fan at top speed. Because your furnace fan distributes air in your home for both the heating and cooling season, an ECM helps save you money throughout the year.

ERMU offers a $150 rebate towards the purchase of a new furnace with an ECM, or a $100 rebate for retrofitting an existing furnace with a ECM.

Rebate Application Requirements:

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) take advantage of the consistent temperature underground. In the winter, heat is pumped out of the ground and transferred to the air in your home, and in the summer, the process is reversed. Combining heating and cooling into one convenient unit, GSHPs operate with 300 to 400 percent efficiency, giving them a higher return on investment than any other technology.

ERMU offers a $600 per ton rebate on closed loop ground source heat pumps. Open looped systems do not quality for rebates.

Rebate Application Requirements:

A WiFi thermostat offers temperature control, in-depth reporting, alerts, and energy savings all at the touch of a button.

ERMU offers a $40 rebate for a WiFi-compatible thermostat.
